Legal deposit of electronic publications or digital materials is the resort to create a comprehensive collection of national publications and to compile an authoritative nation-al bibliographic record. It is the new challenge and inevitable duty that deposit library should deal with. Legal deposit eventually should be a statutory obligation based on the understanding of those surveys conducted by international organizations. This article addresses the present situation in Taiwan and a possible future evolution of legal deposit worldwide. Finally, the authors conclude that, by bringing foreign experiences back into Taiwan, the policy of legal deposit can be transformed to take full advantage of ensuring national preservation and providing feasible access to new forms of material.
