Comparing with 李望洋 (Li, wang-yang), the study of 李逢時 (Li, Feng-shi) seems to be lacking, even though the both were important literatuses of Yilan. In Li Feng-shi's poems, he described views and historical events; those make his works be local and could supply official data. For the reasons mentioned above, I would like to explore Li, Feng-shi's book “Poetical works of 泰階 (tai-jie)”. From those poems' we can understand his past experience and whom he had friendly contacted, such as Besides, his poems reveal his experience of life; it could divide into two parts: “room describing” and “reality criticizing”, the former contains local and nonlocal describing, and the later contains critiques of fighting with weapons, 戴潮春 (dai chao-chun) event, the united army of Britain and France, and the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851-1865). On the basis of these, we could resupply the document of Li, Feng-shi's life and position the value of Li, Feng-shi's works in Taiwan literature in ch'ing. We could conclude several main points from Li, Feng-shi's poems: first, those could resupply parts of the Yilan government officials' name list at that time and show these officials' experience of life; second, those presents Li, Feng-shi's experience of life and his passion for Formosa; third, those show his attention to social reality in Taiwan. This paper was written after my dissertation “A Study of the Formosa Local Literati's Poetic Work during 1821~1874”; it also indicates more explanation and revisal about the conclusion of Li, Feng-shi's poems.
