In 1812 the magistrate of Taiwan province, Yang Ting-li 楊廷理, founded the Yang Shan School 仰山書院 in Gamalan 噶瑪蘭 (present day I-lan) to perpetuate and spread the thought of Yang Shi 楊時, the founder of the Min School 閩學 of Neo-Confucianism. This paper first details the history of the school and then uses Yang’s poems and works by other contemporaries to show how the school was steeped in the Neo-Confucian spirit and intended to work towards the continuation of Chinese culture.
