Chinese characters are not only characters but often are also morphemes; therefore, they are used as the basic foundation in teaching Chinese. In computer development history, the digitization of Chinese characters is a critical advance in Chinese computers which eventually became a powerful e-learning tool to study Chinese characters. In the past, numerous e-learning tools have been constructed to provide multiple learning approaches for Chinese characters, however, the contents provided by these tools hold various restrictions and difficulties. These problems include: insufficient knowledge on how Chinese characters evolved through its history, thus unable to link to other linguistic resources, inadequate reference among Chinese characters, oversimplify relations between traditional and simplified Chinese characters, and reckless rejection of other language forms equipped with sharing ability. This study purposes the role of these problems in learning Chinese characters and how they can be solved by Hantology. Comparing with other e-learning tools for Chinese characters, the advantages of Hantology as a linguistic resource are its ability to improve information processing quality in Chinese characters as well as to enhance the advantage of using traditional Chinese characters in the internet.
