《楚辭》乃屈原之偉大著作，亦是南方文學之代表，也因此文章中充滿了楚國文化，足以與北方文學相比擬。 〈九歌〉是一整套完整的宗教祭典，若簡單看成一套抒情詩，著實可惜。它有美妙的文辭，優美的樂音，熱鬧的歌舞，以及莊嚴的典禮儀式，並且反映出獨特的「人神關係」。「人神關係」是人與自然界各種力量的聯繫，在宗教基本神學裡，「神靈」所代表的乃是一個理想的「聖界」，而「人」所處的則是一個充滿危機和不完美的「凡界」，「人神聯姻」無疑是一種融合聖與凡的行為。事實上，若能找到一種使「聖界」與「凡界」得到可靠的聯繫，甚而融合一體的方法，對人們而言，就如同代表生存的恐慌將不再存在，掌握生命的權柄也終於放置在自己手中，這將是多麼美好的一件事。在中國人的思維裡，天上眾神如同人間倫理體系，實為人們的感情投射而建構出來的美麗世界。
