This paper analyzes the English test items of the college entrance exam during the past three decades. The purpose is to trace the evolution of the English testing and teaching practice in Taiwan. In order to highlight the major changes of the test, this paper divides the history into three stages, each representing the reform of the theories and the practice of English testing. Also we review research on English teaching of high school in the three stages. By doing so, we wish to find out the relationships and interactions between English testing and teaching, and their developments as well.
