Among the poets of 1980s, Wang Tian-Yuan (1954-2009) was little paid attention to by scholars in the past, but he was the first person that created the new style of writing sonnets in Taiwan between the end of 20th century and the beginning of 21st century. In 1988, Wang published his first collection of poems entitled ”If Love is Like Chewing Gum”, which focuses on the refinement of style, content or spirit. This collection displays varieties of styles. Six sonnets in the collection has become the mainstream of sonnet writing. Afterwards, Wang published two collection of poems, ”I Used Fake Money to Buy a Fake Passport-Wang Tian-Yuan's Sonnets” and ”the Collection of Lacking ISBN-Wang Tian-Yuan's Sonnets: Volume II”, in 1996 and 2008 respectively. These two collections address Wang's tender compassion for those who fall in love and the land where the Taiwanese live. Wang unveils the fabrication and hypocrisy of the society through verbal humor and irony, which portraits diverse expression styles of sonnet creating. Meanwhile, Wang also participated in ”Poet Group of an Academy” activity in 1996. He took charge of the publishing affairs, and published more than 80 poems in a combined collection. As such, Wang is an indispensible poet while we discuss the history of 1980s Taiwan modern poetry.
