The prime purpose of library is to promote the information use. Even when libraries gradually transform into information centers in the future and become the nodes in the network, library will still be holding the central position in the information services and librarian will still play an intermediary role as information consultant. Information use is that seeking behavior that leads to the use of information in order to meet an individual's needs. The studies of information use can be divided into "user studies" and "use studies", it has gradually become an important research topic since 1960. The traditional approach to information use study has been system oriented, the future emphasis is however to be placed on the need of the user. In the future, the information use patterns will have the following changes: 1. Electronic documents can be used from a distance. 2. Online retrieval is not limited by the library hours. 3. Several people can use the same database at the same time. 4. Information use fulfills the goal of resources sharing. 5. Documents are stored on a variety of media. 6. The full-text of documents in machine-readable form is available. 7. There are more access points to retrieve information. 8. Selectivity of relevant information is important. 9. Documents in electronic form are easy to revise. 10. Interdisciplinary access of information is available. 11. end users search the databases. This article introduces the information use in Taiwan through a review of following aspects: interlibrary cooperation, reference services, database searching, user's education, and information use patterns. Issues concerning information use, e.g. copyright, ethics, fee-based service, and standard are also discussed.
