MOst of the Chinese businesses in Nagasaki during the Meiji period engaged in seafood and grocery businesses of small to medium sizes. Although the operation capital was not big, these businesses could make the old trade port Nagasaki the center of their trade and developed a big international market. In this paper the original documents and historical materials of the Chinese businesses in Nagasaki have been used as the source and two famous business houses in particular, the Taichanghao and Taiyihao, are taken as examples, in order to make an empirical analysis on the historical background of the expansion of their international trade and the condition of the development of the international network in the beginning of their business. Subsequent changes in the trading practices in Nagasaki are also examined in some details.
