　　　　　本文首先依艾蓮多對政治的構想與當代政治理論家對「政治」一詞意義的界定，可知當代政治理論的涵蓋範圍相當廣泛，依其內容，可歸類成兩個範疇，即社會的政治化，與公共政策，或公共選擇的問題。社會政治化涉及政治思想 (哲學 )、民生政治、自由與平等、社會運動與市民社會、社會正義與福利等問題。而公共選擇涉及理性選擇理論的建構與發展。然後再由此兩個範疇，把當代政治理論的主題，分成八個次級主題來探究，即分成一九五○年代的政治理論；社會正義與福利權利的理論；民主理論；女性主義的政治理論；後現代主義與理述理論；新社會運動與市民社會；自由主義與社群主義的辯論；與理性選擇的理論。在探討與研究這八個次級主題中，吾人就可明顯地觀察與探究當代政治理論的發展，其探究主題與內容，進而可捕捉到二次大戰以後，當代一政治理論發展的整個脈動與各種不同的發展形式。
