Participants of outdoor recreation activities tend to be attached to the site due to the need of specialization for specific activities. This study aims at examining the relationship between recreation specialization and place attachment and also verifying the moderating effect of recreation challenge and social support. Two models are examined in the study. The moderatiog model of recreation challenge explores the relationship between recreation specialization and place attachment, and analyzes the moderating effect of recreation challenge as well. The moderatiog model of social support studies the moderating effect between recreation specialization and place attachment.
The study uses Partial Least Squares (PLS) to analyze 598 valid questionnaires collected from cyclists in Taiwan. The result shows that (1) the recreation specialization of cyclists positively affects their place attachment, which is mostly contributed by the dimension of skill and knowledge; (2) by the multi-group analysis, it is clear that the recreation challenge plays a moderator role in the model; that is, the higher the level of recreation challenge is, the stronger the influence of recreation specialization toward place attachment is. This study concludes that with the enhancement of the specification of cyclists (i.e. riding skills, knowledge for bicycle, psychic commitment to cycling and riding frequency, etc.), their place attachment can be strengthened. In addition, the demand of cyclists for recreation challenge can be fit by arranging various cycling routes and palaces, in order to reinforce effect of recreation specialization on place attachment. Furthermore, leisure education not only increases social support toward cycling, but also intensifies the impact of recreation specialization to place attachment. The results of the study provide a reference for the administration of outdoor recreation to management strategies.
