Global aging is a phenomenon that Taiwan is not immune to. Japan is still leading the chart by becoming the “oldest country” in the world by 2025 with 60+ years old accounting for 35% of its population. China is rapidly becoming number one aging country in the world with an absolute number of 287M people older than 60 years old by 2025 due to its one-child policy (WHO, 2003). Taiwan is catching up at an unprecedented rate by becoming one of the first super-aged countries (20% of population over 60) in the world as well by 2025 (National Development Council, 2016).
Yet, living longer does not necessarily guarantee living better. The average duration of bed-ridden days before pass-away is as high as nine years (Ministry of Health and Welfare, 2015). That is why the World Health Organization propagated its Active Aging (AA) Policy Framework to guide international efforts in addressing global aging challenges. Active aging is defined as the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation, and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age (WHO, 2003), which formed the three pillars of AA policy framework outlined in its 11th World Congress of Public Health Global Ageing as shown below. This also laid the foundation of the series of my studies.
Study 1- Active Aging: A Systematic Literature Review of 2000-2014 SSCI Journal Articles. The first installment of my studies is an in-depth literature review to identify lacunae of the current body of knowledge in the field of active aging.
Study 2- Reciprocal Reinforcement Between Wearable Activity Trackers and Social Network Services in Influencing Physical Activity Behaviors. The second installment is to address the health pillar from preventive perspective on if and how wearable devices can promote physical activities, which is a leading determinant contributing to health.
Study 3- Stereotypes or Golden Rules? Exploring Likable Voice Traits of Social Robots as Active Aging Companions for Tech-Savvy Baby Boomers in Taiwan. The third installment aims to tackle the participation pillar by examining how to equip companion robots with likable voices to encourage baby boomers to stay active socially. As a rising number of retiring baby boomers may be living alone, technology may help to bring social robots as their companions to provide assistance and stay engaged with their social network.
