Why did I illustrate the characteristics of the Lotus Sutra with its methodology of "display of the provisional and manifestation of the ultimate"?it is the result of the author's long-year study on Master Chih-yi's interpretation of the Lotus Sutra. According to The Wonderous Meaning of the Lotus Sutra (Fa-hua Xuan-yi) and The Composition and Sentences of the Lotus Sutra (Fa-hua Wen-ju), the whole Lotus Sutra deals with only the relationship between the provisional and the ultimate which are actually not opposite but interpenetrated. In this light, the author elaborates on the wonderous meanings of the Lotus Sutra with its methodology of exposing the temporary teaching and revealing the real truth.
