The goal of social scientific research is more than explaining or predicting. Explaining is premised upon the independence of the researcher from the subject of study. However, no researchers are independent of the subject of his study. This paper uses a number of analogies and examples to illustrate how researchers' own life history must be a part of the social scientific research.
