和平研究為一跨領域新興學門，然於其初起之際，政治學、社會學及心理學等學者在針對「建構和平」或「維持和平」之觀察解析中，即已發現傳播往往成為其中決定性之關鍵。事實上，第一次世界大戰前後，傳播學界即已著手研究戰爭與和平相關之語藝；1960年代未期開始，和平教育逐漸進入歐美教育體系，傳播溝通能力訓練亦為其重要一環。本文回顧傳播學界近年就和平議題所作之研究，包括和平運動、和平教育、戰爭論述、衝突管理及中介傳播等，並討論傳播於「建構和平」或「維持和平」之價值觀體現過程中，不可或缺之重要性。

Peace studies as an interdisciplinary field has accrued efforts of scholars from anthropology, political science, sociology, and psychology since the 1940’s. In their analyses of peacemaking and peacekeeping processes, communication emerges as key element leading to decisions to war or peace. In fact, communication studies attended to the use of war rhetoric as early as around the World War I. Yet the contribution made by communication scholars has not been adequately recognized in the field of peace studies. This paper reviews recent communication research on peace-related issues in three areas, political rhetoric regarding war and peace, interpersonal communication in peace education, and mediated communication. The author concludes that since communication constitutes the very essence of human existence, study of communication is indispensable to realizing peace in the world.
