The phrase "serious leisure" has a rather curious ring, for seriousness has always been used to describe "work" or "study". Seriousness seems not in accordance with the relaxation essence of leisure, whereas leisure has been seen as the happy, carefree refuge from our earnest pursuit of money and social standing supposedly provided by a paid job. The purpose of this paper was to introduce Robert A. Stebbins' systematical research on serious leisure, its nature, qualities, types (amateur, hobbyist, volunteer), the differences between serious and casual leisure, and the impact of post-industry society, Stebbins conducted many exploratory studies in four areas: art, sport, science and entertainment. The subjects in his studies included musician, theatre, astronomers, archaeologists, baseball players, football players, magician and stand-up comics. The qualitative method was used throughout his studies on serious leisure. He embarked on lengthy, unstructured, face-to-face interview. In 1982, first time, he released the paper entitled "Serious leisure" on Pacific Sociological Review 25:251-72. In the mean time, this paper presented some related results.
