自殺具有重大的社會意義。自殺行為所造成的後果，除了個人的死亡之外，就整體而言，自殺對社會帶來巨大的衝擊，進而造成社會整體的損失。本研究探討臺灣地區近二十一年(1985～2005)的自殺死亡率趨勢及自殺死亡者特徵。為計算自殺死亡率，本研究自內政部和衛生署獲得近二十一年來之全國人口數和全國死亡資料庫。由於近二十一年人口群明顯老化，故以世界衛生組織公布的標準人口組成對自殺率進行標準化，同時亦分析自殺者之相關特質，並做國際比較。社會流行病學人時地分析發現，我國自殺死亡率呈下降後逐年升高之趨勢，且逐漸集中於 25-64歲男性族群，並多使用氣體自殺或由高樓跳下自殺的情況。研究結果提供金融海嘯下自殺防治計畫參考。
The suicide has the significant social meaning. The outcome by suicidal behavior not only for the individual death's, but also for the whole, commits suicide brings the huge impact on the society, then creates the social whole the massive loss. This research discusses the suicide mortality rate tendency and commits suicide the dead characteristic in Taiwan area near 21 year (1985-2005). To calculate the suicide mortality rate, this research obtains near for 21 year national population and the national death information bank from the Ministry of Interior and the department of health. By the seriously aging problem of population near 21 year, the standard population composition which announces by the World Health Organization had been used to standardize the suicide rate, and also analyzes the characteristic of the suicide person, and compare with the international. Both sexes experienced downward trends and then an upward trend from 1985-2005. Males aged 25–64 years experienced the steepest increasing trends. Suicide by means of charcoal-burning and jumping from heights has become a serious public health problem in Taiwan. The analysis and the prevention present situation findings by social epidemiologist, wish to provide the prevention methods under the economic crisis.
