Ballet in Taiwan began from the soil of civil society. Even though in the school setting, several professional dance programs have been established after the 1960s, and many so-called Dance Talented Class have been spread all over the Taiwan after 1980s, the dance club and ballet company established in the society always play an important role to cultivate ballet root, to promote ballet education and to enhance ballet appreciation through various actions including teaching and performance. In other words, the flame of Taiwan ballet in civil society is always kept and ignited ardently, that enlightens those who are interested in ballet and continuously advances the function of social education.This paper aims to review the historical context and outline the picture of ballet development in Taiwan society. By doing so, it enables to help people further understand the evolving process of Taiwan ballet, and to provide some historical materials and records as a ground for future research. Through literature review and interview, in order to illustrate the progressive development of ballet towards professional level gradually in Taiwan society for decades, some dimensions such as how ballet was brought in, to imitate and present Western ballet production, to be imbued by foreign professionals' teaching and performance, to accept ballet training system, to host ballet competition, and to create new ballet work based on the local culture and so on, all will be addressed. Some key persons who had influenced ballet development in Taiwan society are also introduced.
