With an artistic career that spanned Swiss and French culture, Felix Vallotton(1865-1925) was a versatile and prolific Nabi artist who created works depicting the relationship between the sexes throughout his career. By means of analysis of the woodcuts of the Intimités series from his early career, of paintings of mythological subjects created for the Salon d'Automne after the turn of the twentieth century, and the work of Chaste Suzanne from late in his career, this article explores how Vallotton, during different periods of his career, utilized varied media and techniques to address popular social issues during the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, how he reinterpreted the relationship between the sexes with his unique personal style and reinvigorated the traditional iconography with new, contemporary meaning.
