At the end of 2015, people with disabilities accounted for 4.92 percent of the total population of Taiwan. Sports participation has increased slowly among this population segment. Wheelchair tennis is an invigorating outdoor activity that provides opportunities for development of social connections as well as increased self-confidence and self-affirmation. Tournaments offering different levels of awards are held by the International Tennis Federation; however, Taiwan has relatively few entrants in international wheelchair tennis tournaments. Through review of relevant literature, this paper proposes a development strategy designed to promote participation in wheelchair tennis and its international competitions. It also explores the prior development of wheelchair tennis to understand its current connection with international tournaments. Suggestions for the sport in Taiwan include: development of adapted physical education, improvement of relevant facilities, organization of domestic ranking tournaments, advocacy for government policies that promote the sport, and support for professional training.
