The process control method of the zero-inflated Poisson model, or the ZIP chart, is suitable to replace c and u charts in relation to monitoring high quality or near zero-defect production processes. This study develops a ZIP chart through applying the economic design method, and applies genetic algorithms to solve the model and obtain its optimal parameters, with the aim of determining the most economically efficient monitoring process. This study then uses an example of a high quality process to illustrate the application of the model developed. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is conducted in order to examine the effect of changing the cost model parameters on the optimization of the control chart design and cost. Findings show that changes in operation cost parameters cause the highest impact on cost.
