When World Intellectual Property Rights Organization (WIPO) announced the "2014 Global Innovation Index", Singapore and Hong Kong were the only two Asian countries ranked on the top 10. Design education in Taiwan has been developing for 50 years, higher design education plays the key contribution on fostering design professionals in the island. How to strengthen the designer’s legal literacy and how to balance the application of the design creativity and protection of intellectual rights will be the important topics on design education. The study has made the relevant intellectual property laws and litigation cases as a starting point. Based on the need of law knowledge for higher design education, a document analysis is applied to the current situation of law course materials and syllabus planning of intellectual property rights to analyze the development of current design education. The objective is to understand the implementation status of the law curriculum in the design relevant departments, and to analyze the similarities and differences of their intellectual property rights curriculum planning. It offers as a guide for future development of legal education in the design school. The study concludes that design education should popularize the curriculum of intellectual property rights, enhance fundamental copyright law class, recruit professional legal scholars of specially appointed teacher and structure the adequate curriculum of intellectual property rights for design field.
