The purpose of this paper is to study the situation and trend of household welfare and the difference of household welfare categorized by residence, family size, occupation, education and age of household heads in Taiwan from 1976. the indicators have been derived from the indirect utility function of the Aggregate Almost Ideal Demand System in which the total expenditure of household is corrected by general equivalence scales. The empirical results were completely based on every sample of the annual family survey data. The index of household welfare in Taiwan steadily rose from 1.989 in 1976 to 2.807 in 1990. The comparisons among the categorized households were briefly shown in the following: The welfare of city households was highest; one-person households lowest; households with age 45-54 of head highest; households with the head aged over lowest; nonfarm households higher.
