在威爾斯《時間機器》的反資產階級敘事之下,潛藏著深刻的意識形態性,這種意識形態性也突出表現在他早期幾部科幻小說中的墮落者形象上。在威爾斯對墮落者的想象中,貴族化的資產階級、東方、唯美主義者、女子氣和同性戀等形象相互糾纏重疊,其間階級、種族、性屬和性知識話語等不同范疇彼此流動。威爾斯筆下糾纏的他者形象,不僅表征了相關(偽)科學話語對多種他者觀念的建構過程,也以同等隱蔽的文學想象參與其中。
