Taking city maps in the local chronicles as research objects, this paper studies the city image of ancient Chinese cities by using the multiple correlation analysis method. The results show that: fi rstly, the city image of ancient Chinese cities can be divided into internal-external balanced, introverted, and extraverted types. The city image of all these three types was mainly about the inside of the city, while that about the outside of the city was complementary, which showed greater similarity than disparity. Secondly, the city image of ancient Chinese cities was affected by the geographical environment and had significant differences in geographical space. Thirdly, the city image of ancient Chinese cities dynamically changed over time, which was extraverted in the mid-Qing Dynasty but introverted in the late-Qing Dynasty. Finally, the paper points out that the city image of ancient Chinese cities overall refl ects the traditional social order in space, i.e., "urban-rural integration", which demonstrates the concept of ideal city in the ancient times in China.
