金陵大學是1910年由南京三所基督教書院合并創辦的教會大學。20世紀20年代中國民族主義和革命運動對金陵大學造成巨大挑戰。該校的美國當局、南京校方和中國籍教師群體被動或主動做出各種回應,直至學校的治理結構完成根本性轉變。20年代初,金陵大學在北京政府教育部完成"部分立案"。1926年,在五卅運動以及北京政府教育部頒布強硬的立案政策的沖擊下,金陵大學校內行政層開始改組。至1928年實現校董會設立、中國人出任校長和完成立案的全方位轉變,金陵大學由此進入新時代。金陵大學回應立案以及內部改組是一個環環相扣的漸變過程,既體現了中國教會大學在此歷史關頭處理與中國政府之間關系的共性,又有其特殊的一面。
