Over the past century, the Taipei area has become the prime district of politics, economy, trade and culture in Taiwan, as well as has abundant resources from the government and local society. Because of the development of Taipei area is very dazzling in modern Taiwan history, it attracts a lot of academic researchers or cultural workers to create fruitful achievements of area studies. Those researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds are different in approach, also has their own focus. This paper attempts to analyze the achievements, evolutionary tendency and academic characteristics of Taipei area studies in the last 20 years, via the focus on the Gazetteers and dissertations. Among the Gazetteers of the city and county, especially of the township and district, have presented good quality results. With the deepening of democratic consciousness, the idea of public history and the implementation of ethnic care, compilers not only continued the traditional concept which considered Gazetteers as the books for the ruling class, but also stressed its functions as the local textbook or encyclopedia. The chapters of the life custom, the multi-ethnic culture and the tourism assets in the Gazetteers are gradually paid more attentions. Concerning the dissertations, researchers who come from different discipline backgrounds, usually have different research orientation and focused object. Meanwhile, we can also see the interdisciplinary exchange and dialogue, the reference and integration between the multiple subjects, as well as the research orientation of both theory/practice, macro/micro, dynamic/static and center/edge. They jointly show the vitality and the vision of Taipei regional researches or local studies.
