從人類出現在地球的那一刻起,歷史即跟隨著人類文化發展的腳步一起成長,至今不滅。我們創造歷史,紀錄歷史,但也反省歷史、批判歷史,於是對於「歷史本身」的哲學探究隨之而起。這種「哲學的歷史」研究方式完整的呈現在黑格爾將近十年授課歷程的歷史哲學講稿之中,它除了表達出黑格爾個人的歷史觀之外,其中亦隱含著時代因素影響之下所延展出來的特殊意涵與目的。
「時代創造思想,思想創造時代」,時代與思想永遠存在著無法切割的因果關係。站在十八世紀末、十九世紀初西方哲學思想邁入當代之際的黑格爾,其歷史哲學無法避免的顯露出與當時代之間的緊密關係。從宗教改革、啟蒙運動,乃至法國大革命,「主體性」,「理性」及「自由」等觀念無不深刻影響著黑格爾的想法,也影響了他對於歷史問題的思考。這樣的思考,透過融入黑格爾整體哲學思想體系之中以剖析其歷史觀,更能顯其全貌性。
黑格爾相信歷史是積極而進步的,精神意識是歷史文化創造與發展的本質,世界歷史是精神在時間之流中實現自我的成果,其展現出自由的特質,然而在意含nous與logos意義的絕對理性上帝之下,精神的自由充其量只能是有限的自由,隨之所創造的歷史也只是在上帝精心策劃下之歷史,它亦是受到限制的。黑格爾批判權威宗教,卻仍擺脫不了宗教的桎梏,這使得他的歷史哲學呈現出神學色彩,歷史與國家都必須在上帝的保證之下維持其理性的發展。更由於強烈的愛國心驅使,德意志成為世界精神辯證發展之下的最高國度,相較於它,印度中國等東方國度只是一人為自由的國度,希臘羅馬則是少數人懂得自由的國度,其自我民族優越感表露無疑,也驗證了其歷史哲學的預設目的,同時也加深了其對於後世的影響。
