Research has highlighted the importance of the role of an individual’s physical self. For older adults, physical self-concept has been proved to relate to their physical activity, mental health, and well-being. The self in the future is another important perspective, but yet to be explored in detail. Thus, this study focused on older adults' "Possible Selves" (Markus &; Nurius, 1986) in a physical setting.
Fist, a qualitative study was conducted to identify the underlying dimensions of possible selves related to physical activity in older population. After developing a preliminary version of the Possible Selves Scale, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis with three independent samples were conducted and resulted in four dimensions which are essential to older adults' physical activity: "Lifestyle &; Leisure", "Health &; Diseases", "Independence &; Physical Strength", and "Body &; Appearance". In addition, known-group differences, criterion-related validity, and model testing were performed as the initial evidence of validity.
In conclusion, though the hypotheses were only partially supported, results from this study demonstrated that the Possible Selves Scale has preliminary psychometric properties. The results, limitations, and directions for future research were discussed to advance sufficiently knowledge in the extant literature.
