ABSTRACT
This qualitative case study was conducted to understand the learning experiences of the college teacher learners of Wenzao Ursuline College in Taiwan who participated in the Teacher Summer Study Tour (TSST) program, a summer study tour to the United States, from 2009 to 2011. Seven college teacher learners who voluntarily participated in the study were interviewed. The research questions include investigating their educational travel motivations, how they learned, what learning benefits were gained, and important factors contributing to these benefits. Methods of in-depth interview, ZMET, their personal written reports and field notes were used to triangulate the data and elicit the underlying meaning from the perspectives of the participants. The major findings are summarized below.
1.When joining a summer overseas study program, most college teacher learners were motivated by a mix of factors, which were categorized in three groups: education and learning, recreation and fantasy, and spirituality and actualization.
2.The TSST program, which consisted of a variety of diverse learning activities, was perceived as a rewarding, fruitful and in-depth learning experience for most learners.
3.The learning experience was shaped by complex elements in the learning process, from pre-departure, during participation, and after returning home.
4.In-depth learning experiences, including experiential learning and transformative learning, occurred in this summer study tour when the adult learners were afforded various learning activities in a supportive and inspiring environment.
5.Spiritual learning happened unexpectedly as a unique and rewarding result which supplemented the success of the TSST program.
6.The benefits of a summer study tour extended beyond language learning to include cultural learning, personal actualization, and professional growth, in varying degrees.
7.The learning benefits could be attributed to various factors related to the learners, organizations of hosting and home schools, the hosts, the learning context, and the program arrangements, all of which further interplayed with each other in the foreign setting.
The TSST has shown that a summer study tour could be a rewarding and inspiring journey having profound implications for home institutions, adult learners, and the hosts. Suggestions are generated for future study trip planning.
