　　　　　世界衛生組織（World Health Organization, WHO）指出，西元2020年以前，憂鬱將是心血管疾之外造成人類失能（disability）的第二大原因，因而被稱為「二十一世紀的癌症」，美國國家心理衛生研究院（National Institute of Mental Health, NIMH）前主席Lewis Judd亦指出「憂鬱症是新世紀的黑死病」（depression as the plague of the modern era），突顯憂鬱症之嚴重性。本篇文章針對兒童與青少年憂鬱症之定義、流行病學、臨床徵候與相關因素做一探討，在兒童與青少年憂鬱疾患的盛行率調查中，兒童憂鬱症之點盛行率約介於0.4-2.5％之間，青少年憂鬱症之點盛行率則介於0.4-8.3％之間；在相關因素中僅就性別、生活事件歸因、人際關係、因應策略與憂鬱症之關係加以探討，並從過去文獻中分析此四項因素與兒童、青少年憂鬱症狀之關係。
