The Asia-Pacific region has undergone a dramatic change since the end of the Cold War. For instance, Taiwan has become a full democracy and a rising authoritarian China has rapidly increased its economic and military strength. The United States has therefore faced many challenges in order to fulfill its commitments to the defense of Taiwan and to protect its interest in the Asia-Pacific region highlighted in the Taiwan Relations Act. To maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait and protect the U.S.'s interests in the region in the future, the U.S. may have to take into account of Taiwan's democracy and its external challenges including a military threat from China.
