品格教育在今天已是世界潮流,其重要性與急迫性已不容忽視。中華文化的智慧經典蘊藏品格教育的寶藏,其中最具代表性的就是「論語」,因此本研究嘗試將英譯版「論語」應用在「大一英文」課程中,透過適當主題的挑選及多元的教學活動設計,期望在教授國際語言的同時,亦達品格涵養之效。除討論英譯論語作為英語學習教材之適當性外,本研究亦檢視針對此教材所設計的教學方法可能產生的功效及困難。問卷結果顯示,古老智慧歷久彌新,只要善加設計運用,即可能兼顧語言學習與品格陶養,引起學習的興趣與共鳴。
Character education has become a trend in the world these days and
its importance cannot be over-emphasized. As is well-known, the Chinese
classics are a good source of wisdom for cultivating good character, one of the representatives being the Analects of Confucius (Lun Yu). Since students got exposure to this classic from their high school days, their solid background knowledge serves as a good facilitator for learning this classic in the target language, and bringing the Chinese classic Lun Yu into English class thus becomes a possibility for integrating character education into English language teaching and learning. Through selection of topics and design of various teaching activities,
this study tries to make the traditional value from this classic fresh and friendly for these EFL learners. Besides investigating the propriety of this innovative teaching material, this study probes into the effects and difficulties of the teaching method for this kind of teaching material. Results show this new way of learning English and traditional Chinese value acceptable and interesting.
