This research purpose was to explore patients' expectations of "good nurse" competence and influence factors. This was a descriptive and cross-sectional research. The research subjects were the clients from the medical, surgical, obstetrics and gynecology wards in a medical center of central Taiwan. The inclusion criteria comprised of patients who were hospitalized for more than two days, aged over 18 years, and alert. 20-25 clients per ward were randomly sampled, and the total subjects were 250. 211 subjects answered the structural questionnaire, and the response rate was 84.4%. The research results showed that most of the subjects were expecting "good nurse" professional competence to possess professional knowledge and skill (4.63±0.38), the next in sequence should have being critical thinking (4.51±0.46), and ethics accomplishment (4.46±0.50). The influencing factors of "good nurse" professional competence expectation were gender, religious belief, job, age and experiences in the hospital. The findings of this study may contribute to the reference in improving nursing education and practice, and help future nursing professionals. In addition, patients may benefit from nursing care, and subsequently, enhance the image of nursing.
