Ma Yi-fu and Xiong Shi-li were two iconic philosophers of the Contemporary New Confucianism in the first half of the 20th Century. This paper argues that Ma Yi-fu's "Theory of the Six Arts" and Xiong Shi-li's "New Consciousness-Only Doctrine", each of which established a new philosophical paradigm, share a common theoretical foundation-"san yi" (literally "three changes"), but interpret it with a different emphasis. Their philosophical tendencies later became the origins of two different approaches taken In Contemporary New-Confucianism. For a healthy future development of Confucianism, it is necessary to comprehend and synthesize both these approaches.
