This paper argues that modes of understanding built on familiarity with the other, as well as on contrastive opposition can become an obstacle in intercultural research. This dilemma is mainly discussed on the backdrop of the formative imprint of language. A perspective to circumvent both dangers is finally built on the notion of exercise in Elberfeld’s transcultural phenomenology, bringing his approach in contact with especially Walter Benjamin’s concept of translation.
