This dissertation studies the representation of national character of Moors and Chinese in Cervantes’s Don Quijote de la Mancha based on the method and the theory of Image Studies. On the one hand, to illustrate how the images of Moors and Chinese are received in Don Quijote, this study first examines external evidence by discussing the following issues: the circulation of books in Spain during the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth, the “best-sellers” in Spanish Golden-Age literature, the relationship between Don Quijote and several versions of Spanish translations of Orlando furioso in sixteenth-century Spain to understand how the leading literary media of disseminating the images of Moors and Chinese during Spanish Renaissance were chivalric romance and travel writing. On the other hand, to identify how Cervantes might rewrite and parody both kinds of images, this study then focuses on internal analysis by comparing the differences among the stereotypical roles of Moors and Chinese in the popular chivalric romance and travel accounts during sixteenth-century Spain, and by considering Cervantes’s parodies related to the images of Moors and Chinese in Don Quijote. This research argues that investigating the representation of the images of Moors and Chinese in Don Quijote is a way to detect Cervantes’s realism of satirizing chivalric literature.
