Effective communication is a key to successful team functioning in sports. Based on social exchange theory, communication is a process that individuals exchange resources through message transmission. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the effectiveness of communication among teammates in sport teams. We conducted a series of studies. In conceptualization phase, we developed the concept of effective communication in sport teams by means of qualitative research. In operationalization phase, we developed a Questionnaire for Effective Communication in Sport Teams (QECST). Results from explore factor analysis and item analysis showed a 5-factor model, and each factor had good internal consistency. In factor validity phase, QECST was revised and its factor structure was cross-validated. Results from confirmatory factor analysis confirmed that QECST had a 5-factor model and good model fit. In construct validity phase, the factor structure of QECST was confirmed again. Besides, the relationships among 3 components of effective communication in sport teams (communication content, communication style, communication completeness) and 3 criteria (outcome-oriented team confidence, satisfaction of team task contribution, role ambiguity) showed that effective communication in sport teams had good convergent validity and good discriminant validity. According to our studies, we developed a concept that can be used to describe the effective communication in sport teams, and we provided evidence for its construct validity.
