The Chinese title of this paper suggests a task of re-interpreting the concept of tolerance by a proper approach, which is from a point of view of the Chinese lifeworld. The fact that the Chinese pronunciation of the two characters signifying "tolerance" bears the same meaning of "to open and to widen and fuse," reveals the double nature of language. Tolerance could be understood in the Chinese language as both the "bearing" of a status quo and the openness for a new horizon. Being aware of this fact, this paper will focus on the Chinese approach to the concept of tolerance. There is a difference between writing and speech, and the difference implied points to a new philosophical dimension. As a consequence, we have chosen both hermeneutics and de-construction as our main approach.
