This paper explains the reasons for the renaissance of virtue ethics, and shows its influences on contemporary moral education. Its explanation consists of four parts. First, the four difficulties confronted modern ethical theories of deontology and utilitarianism are explained. Second, virtue ethics is shown, its characteristics expounded, and the understandings and uses of this term by various philosophers presented. Third, the development of the virtue ethics in recent times is examined in its generality. Finally, its connection with contemporary moral education is discussed.
