吳、越兩國位居長江下游，因壤土毗連，世代為敵，征伐不休，在雙方諸多交戰中，「夫椒之戰」尤具特別意義。夫椒之戰是吳王夫差與越王句踐兩人的首次交戰，事在魯哀公元年，即周敬王二十六年、吳夫差二年、越句踐三年、西元前494年。戰爭結果吳國大獲全勝，夫差因而躊躇滿志，致力於爭霸中原，而戰敗的越國，靠行賄吳太宰嚭而得免亡國滅種，行成於吳國。越王句踐表面上對吳俯首稱臣，奉上布匹寶物、珠玉美女，甚至親身入吳卑事夫差，實則臥薪嘗膽，十年生聚，十年教訓，極思報仇復國。歷經二十年的積累與準備，句踐終於復越亡吳，成為春秋時期的最後一位霸主。所以發展如此，追根究底，全繫乎此戰。 勝負結果的效應作用及其後續發展所造成的影響性，使「夫椒之戰」在吳、越相爭歷史中具備重要的地位與意義。本文即就交戰之原因、會戰過程與結果、後續發展等面向來探討「夫椒之戰」的內涵與意義，除全盤呈現此役之來龍去脈、前因後果外，並對吳王夫差及越王句踐在事件中的舉措加以評論。

Wu and Yue countries were on the lower reaches of Yangtze River. Because two countries adjoined, they regarded each side as enemy for generations. The wars were endless. The war of Fu-Jian was special importance in many wars between two countries. The war of Fu-Jiao was the first war between Wu and Yue countries in B.C.494. Wu country won the war completely. Fu-Chai was self-contented. He attempted to become the chief of feudal princes in Central Plains. Yue country was defeated didn’t vanish and Gou-Jian could go to Wu country by bribing the courtier of Wu country. Gou-Jian pretended that he submitted to victor Fu-Chai. He presented to him with pearls, jades and pretty womon. Even he waited on Fu-Chai alone. But he doesn’t forget to sleep on brushwood and tasted gall. He want to build up his strength to avenge an insult. He prepared and accumulated force for twenty years. After all he eliminated Yue country and become the last chief of feudal princes in Chun-Qiu times. Why did history go into this way? It was due to the important war of Fu-Jiao. The effect of the war influenced the further development. The war of Ju-Jian was important during Wu and Yue countries’ competition in history. This article discussed about reason, process, Result and development for the war of Fu-Jiao, try to present the truth of the war and comment the behavior of Fu-Chai and Gou-Jian.
