　　　　　莎士比亞曠世悲劇傑作《李爾王》在1606年首演之後，三百年間並不走紅，十七至十九世紀中葉這150年間，更以泰特(Nahum Tate)的大團圓改編本方式問世。莎翁作品的的原貌，要等到1838年才由英國名演員麥克利地(William Charles Macready)恢復，到二十世紀的三四十年代才在世界舞臺走紅。本文闡述這個劇本在歐美舞臺上的演出史，從1606年的宮廷首演到1962年彼得．布魯克(Peter Brook)為剛剛成立的英國皇家莎翁劇團(Royal Shakespeare Company)執導的作品，包括莎翁時期的公眾演出，泰特在1681年的改編，十八紀紀至二十世紀英美名演員(諸如David Garrick, John Philip Kemble, Edmund Kearn, William Charles Macready, Charles Kean, Sir Henry Irving, Edwin Forrest, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Donald Wolfit, Lord Laurence Olivier, Paul Scofield等等)對李爾一角的詮釋。至於近代的著名演出，則將以另文詳述。
