　　　　　不寬容一直是人類歷史裡的諸多悲劇的起因。不寬容之禍害雖至為明照，但文明社會實踐寬容之步伐不僅緩慢，甚且屢有倒退，以致非以無數人之血淚即不足以喚起人們之注目。寬容是為不同意見和價值的和平共存而服務的，其目的是協助造就一個和而不同的社會，俾使多樣性和差異性得以成為改善群體生活的積極動能。寬容雖不是解決群體生活之諸種矛盾的萬靈丹，但其之有益於民主社會則無疑置疑。本文先分析寬容理念自宗教改革以降的歷史形塑背景，進而探討洛克的經典式論證的基本特性，最後則針對寬容的證成、寬容與權利、文化差異與寬容、寬容的限度等當今之重要相關問題，逐一加以討論。
　　　　　Instances of intolerance that stained with unwilling tears and unworthy blood of different generations one after another scattered throughout human history. The awakening of the necessity of toleration, in the form of religious toleration, began in the after math of the Reformation with John Locke as its first defender in true theoretical depth. Since then, situations that were in need of toleration expanded rapidly to cover almost all aspects of everyday life. Intolerance as a self-righteous belief in infallibility tries not only to coerce but also to subdue people with different views and values. On the contrary, toleration just wants coexistence of differences. Toleration is, without doubt, still needed today. But the ways it presents itself are much more complex nowadays. This article, which consists of a historical part and a theoretical one, tries to scrutinize the possibilities and inner problems in practicing toleration in our modern world.
