Liehyeu is an isolated-island 2 km away from the main island of Jinmen County. Because of its special geographical environment and deficiency in medical resources, the residents of Liehyeu may demand different and special medical services. These medical demands can be better understood by conducting a survey of satisfaction. Therefore the purposes of this study were to investigate the present condition and utilization of medical resources at Liehyeu, the residents’ health status, and the satisfaction of medical services. This study was a cross-sectional questionnaire survey. The population was the citizens of Liehyeu at the age of twenty or older. Using the stratified systematic sampling technique, three hundred subjects were selected as study samples of which 235 subjects responded to the survey with a response rate of 78.33%. The demographic profiles of the study samples showed that the average age was 40.24. Most of them had completed high school educations and their monthly salaries ranged from NT$ 20,000 to 40,000. This survey showed that 93.20% of the study samples preferred to select the local Liehyeu Branch of Jinmen Hospital because of its convenience in transportation. The averaged traveling time was 45.21 minutes. Being the highest percentage, 43.40% of the study samples considered their health status as normal. There were 55.70% of the study samples had visited physicians with an average of 3.01 times in the last half years. There were 14.89% of the study samples had visited physician at Taiwan with an average of 2.71 times last year. The residents of Liehyeu expended an average of NT$ 198.07 for medicines from pharmacies each time. The majority of study samples had no admission, emergency and transfer last year. The major reason for the 27.23% of the study samples to visit physicians at Jinmen Island was because they could not recover from the same illness or they required advanced examination, operation or admission. In the order of importance, the main factors in choosing a medical institution were physician’s clinical skills, travel distance and facilities. There were 6.81% of the study samples had visited physicians at Shiahmen in China. The satisfaction level ranged from medium to high. The results of this survey also indicated that the Liehyeu Branch of Jinmen Hospital got higher satisfaction level than the Hwangtsuoh Hospital in OPD, specialties, medical facilities, service attitude of physicians and overall medical service.
