女性一生約三分之一處於停經狀態,喪失雌激素保護機制後,脂肪細胞分解能力降低、脂肪囤積於臟壁,脂肪分佈情形改變、肌肉量隨老化流失、身體組成比例及基礎代謝率隨之衰退。停經女性因健康狀況限制活動程度,從事身體活動時間明顯少於停經前,導致身體適能欠佳,影響生活品質。女性進入停經期後,面臨心血管疾病與骨質疏鬆兩大疾病威脅,其危險因子均與身體組成的變化有關,除靠荷爾蒙療法延緩身體不適外,有效地控制身體組成,維持適當肌肉量亦是關鍵。藉由運動維持健康生活型態,透過改善身體組成,降低疾病風險,增進並延長獨立自主壽命。在運動處方中以健走與阻力訓練最爲適合,健走是極爲簡易且安全性高的運動,能有效降低體脂肪達到控制體重、改善心肺適能,但對於增加肌肉量助益有限;阻力訓練可提升肌肉質量與強化肌力,亦是維持婦女良好身體組成不可或缺的關鍵。
