The characteristics of the marine studies at Australian senior schools are found as follows: (a) Australian school marine education is rooted in Australian context as an ocean country; (b) the development of Australian school marine education is closely linked with the government's policies and system thinking; (c) the general objectives and key competencies of Australian school marine studies are pragmatically oriented; (d) themarine studies at Australian schools are involved with industry partners. This paper further compares the differences of general objectives and key competencies of marine studies between Taiwan and Australian schools, and finds that the former is knowledge-oriented, while the latter focuses more on practical issues.
