Xu Xiaobin's novels are based on private experience and utilize the narrative of myth in order to combine private memory and history. Therefore, her works are quite unique among women writers in China. Written between 1981-1995, they describe how women establish their own value and are forced to confront the narrative of myth of man and power consumption. Women are unable to reach a spiritual home, not to mention find the location of the subject in history. "Feathered serpent" describes women's genealogy and mythology, trying to show the spiritual totem, but finding that writing women's history is quite difficult.
