虎尾寮別稱「番仔寮」，原住民舊有番社的遺址，其名稱又泛指受原住民建築影響，大門開口位在山牆面的民居樣式。根據歷史記載今大甲溪與大安溪沿岸一帶，為平埔道卡斯族、巴則海族舊社所在，此處至今目前依然流傳著虎尾寮厝或是虎尾寮地名；由於大甲溪與大安溪兩岸河流沖刷，造成近海至平原河畔擁有多樣地形；在地形、風、水等條件使然下，此處居民發展出多樣的虎尾寮適地性構築及施作技術工法，在研究上相當具有潛力。本研究企圖梳理在地域性已知的大甲溪與大安溪兩岸虎尾寮，透過田野調查與歷史史料考究，了解人、地互動之間所產生的變化，對於尚遺存的地方性文化資產，提出更具理解的知識，使其流傳於當代。

Ho Vei Hut is also known as ＂Fan Zi＂ (aboriginal) huts58, It refers to the remains of the aborigine's villages and it is also generally referred to the slope-facing main door design influenced by the aborigine's architecture. According to historical records, the coastal areas of the two sides of the Ta Chia River and Ta An River were the old location of Ping Pu Road Chia Ssu Tsu Clan and Pa Tse Hai Clan. Even until now, these places are still known as Ho Vei Hut location or Ho Vei Hut. The Ta Chia River and Ta An River flow through the area and create various land formations from the shore to the plain. Under the different conditions of land shape, wind and water, the aborigines in the area developed different forms of adaptive architecture and construction methods of the Ho Vei Hut which possess potential for in-depth study. This study aimed to achieve a deeper understanding of the Ho Vei Hut on the sides of the Ta Chia River and Ta An River through field-trip investigation and historical analysis. This is to understand the interaction between humans and the land, and to produce more comprehensive information of the remained local culture heritage in order to keep it alive.
