本文以十六世紀羅馬波波洛廣場(Piazza del Popolo)的三岔路口為例,探討教宗保羅三世(Paul III,1534-1549)的政治局勢,以及當代藝術家的人文理念。波波洛廣場三岔路口在保羅三世時期形成,呼應當代藝術家人文理念,以三條寬直道路塑造對稱合諧的城市景觀,以當代標準來看是相當創新的設計。三岔路口的對稱效果不僅妝點羅馬城混亂的市容,也讓保羅三世得以向世人誇耀他是一位熱愛上帝真理的教宗,藉此宣示教宗神聖崇高的地位。波波洛廣場三岔路可說是觀察十六世紀教宗政治環境,以及藝術發展的重要案例。
Taking the sixteenth century three-way intersection of Piazza del Popolo as an example, this article discusses the relationship between the political circumstances of Pope Paul III (1534-1549) and the humanistic ideals of contemporary artists. The three-way intersection of Piazza del Popolo, built during the period of Paul III, echoed the humanistic ideals of contemporary artists in that the three intersecting roads shaped a symmetrical and harmonious view of the city, as well as represented an innovative design when judged by contemporary standards. The symmetry of the three-way intersection not only beautified Rome, but also promoted the holy status of Paul III by demonstrating that this was a pope who truly loved God's truth. In the three-way intersection of Piazza del Popolo it is thus possible to observe the religious and political environment of the sixteenth century, as well as find an important example of artistic development.
