When the Taipei City Department of Rapid Transit Systems (DORTS) was established, Taiwan did not have MRT construction experience. This led DORTS to hire foreign consultants to assist with MRT planning. Since then, DORTS has gained experience in the planning, construction, and maintenance of a rapid transit system while systematically documenting this knowledge. This paper outlines the concept of knowledge management and uses specific examples to illustrate key elements of its application, including obtaining the core MRT technology needed for knowledge management, adopting management methodologies, and using information technology to assist in management. It also describes how to evaluate the effectiveness of knowledge management based on performance metrics related to popularity, growth, extension, integration, transformation, and creativity. Furthermore, this paper provides a case study that can encourage others in the engineering industry to apply knowledge management in their own work.
